Per- and Polyfluorinated Alkyl Substances (PFAS), such as PFOA and PFOS, are “forever chemicals” that resist natural breakdown in both our environment and our bodies. These chemicals are used to make products that resist heat, stains, oil, and water. They can be found in Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) firefighting products and a variety of consumer products. These include food packaging, carpet, clothes, cosmetics, cookware, and cleaning products. PFAS can also be found in your surrounding environment: soil, air, drinking water, and ground water. As people are exposed to these chemicals from different sources over time they may suffer adverse health effects.
PFAS chemicals are an emerging concern that may lead to serious health problems according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Your environment includes where you live, what you eat, products you use, where you work, what you cook on, and even your home air and water quality. Knowing the PFAS levels in your blood can help you better understand how your environment has affected you. In a report from the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, the committee recommends clinicians to offer PFAS blood testing to patients who are likely to have a history of elevated exposure, such as those with occupational exposures or those who live in areas known to be contaminated. If testing reveals PFAS levels associated with an increased risk of adverse effects, patients should receive regular screenings and monitoring for these and other health impacts.
